The Nightmares and Antitheses which haunt the Endless Plains are terrifying beings, remnants of the Tabula Rasa. The Nightmares are by far the most common and, luckily, the least dangerous.

Appearance
The natural appearance of a Nightmare is that of a shadow, seen at the edge of vision. A glint in the distance, the shadow of a bird, when the sky is empty. When a Nightmare approaches prey, however, it links itself to them, and takes a form that it feels will best keep them unaware, or inspire the most fear.
Abilities
Nightmares feast upon being, and especially memory. When they link to a creature, they gain access to that being's own store of power, and therefore are often capable of providing a fair fight to creatures of any level, which becomes unfair when one realizes that conventional injury has no meaning to them. As they can only link to a single person at any given time, however, those who travel in groups are largely safe.
Nightmares in History
So long the Seer in the fields had strode
That he no longer feared the things they held
The shadows fled at his patron's light
And his mind was not worried by that lode
But in his famous hour of grief
He walked amidst the flowering field
And shadows flowed from earth and sky
And whispered '"Though you fight or fly,"
"And cower in the light of day,"
"And throw our whisperings aside"
"We claimed you on that fateful day"
"You let another heart inside"
