Wiki
From Tel'Laerad Wiki
A wiki is a freely editable place in which users can create and edit articles, most famously popularized by Wikipedia. They, or at least most, have historic records, allowing the articles to be seen as they were at any point in time, They are generally used to keep information or records of some kind, while allowing either everyone or just a specific group of people to edit, improve, update, and add to it.
The Tel'Laerad Wiki is for storing information about Tel'Laerad and everything on it, including:
- Public RPs.
- Games played on Tel'Laerad or by Tel'Laeradians.
- Help documents and references for Tel'Laerad.
- Public information from the staff, such as the staff list, the rules list, and our disclaimers and privacy policy.
- Users of Tel'Laerad; all registered users get a page at User:<Username> which they can edit and use as a personal page as they wish.
It keeps this information in a place that's open, public, and lasting, so that everybody can find it, it can be collaborated upon, people can find out what RPs and games are available for them to play in easily, and it can be used to keep records. The Tel'Laerad wiki is open for everyone to edit, so feel free to add pages and information to existing pages, so long as they are at least a little relevant to Tel'Laerad.
Using Tel'Laerad Wiki
To create a page, simply search for it, and select the option to create the page offered when it isn't found. To edit an existing page, simply click on the "edit" tab while viewing it. Either way, you'll be taken to the editing page.
In the editing page, you can simply type in your changes and click "Save page". Most text entered will come out exactly as typed, with the exception that extra spaces are removed. To create a new paragraph, you need to leave a blank line before the new paragraph added.
There is also special markup, ways of writing text that mean something special, that you can use to create sections, make text bold or italic, and perform other formatting. The most basic things you need are "== Section ==" on a line of its own to create a major section, and "=== Subsection ===" used in the same way to create a subsection. For other markup, there is a document linked from the the Wiki's help which lists everything.
Remember that you can always see how other pages were made, as even if they are official staff pages restricted to staff editing, as there is still a "view source" tab that shows you the text making the page. This means that you can see the markup used for other pages and find out how they're written, as an example for your own editing. In fact, why not click "view source" on this page to see an example now?
Features
Our wiki in particular uses MediaWiki and possesses all its features, including:
- Categories, allowing pages to be grouped.
- A "User" page for each user, allowing personal pages for registered users.
- A "Talk" page for each real page, allowing comments and discussion about that page to be stored alongside it.
- "Special" pages, containing information on the wiki and individual pages on it, such as links and lists of pages meeting certain conditions.
- Uploading images, and including them in pages using markup.
- Records of history for every page, and the ability to view it as it was at any point in time.
These can be accessed through the main line of tabs at the top of every article, linking to the talk and history pages for that page, as well as through the toolbox, which links to special pages and the upload form.
